Bioidentical vs. Synthetic
Bioidentical hormones such as compounded estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone are biochemically similar to hormones made by your body. They are utilized and metabolized as if they were made by your body. Synthetic hormones such as conjugated equine estrogens (Premarin®), medroxyprogesterone (Provera®), and methyltestosterone (AndroGel®) are not biochemically similar to hormones made by your body. Your liver will have to convert these hormones into a bioidentical form before they can be utilized properly. Both bioidentical and synthetic hormones have the same potential risks and side-effects. The main benefits of bioidentical hormone therapy is that your prescriptions can be customized, the hormones are familiar to your body, and a therapeutic effect may be achieved at low doses.
